About the Outer Banks & Our Inn
The Outer Banks is a wonderful destination year-round, especially for travelers seeking a peaceful, adult-focused getaway. While July and August remain the busiest months with families visiting, guests looking to avoid peak family travel times might prefer visiting outside of these summer months. With no distinct shoulder season, each time of year offers its own charm, making any season ideal for experiencing the tranquility and beauty of the Outer Banks.
You can drive on certain beaches in the Outer Banks, but you’ll need an Off-Road Vehicle (ORV) permit. Beach driving is permitted on Hatteras Island from October through April, and year-round in designated areas of Kill Devil Hills and Nags Head.
Vehicles must be licensed for highway use.
ATVs and motorcycles are prohibited.
Beach driving is not allowed in Southern Shores or Kitty Hawk.
- You must enter and leave the beach at designated numbered ramps.
- Night driving is not allowed May – November 15th 9:00 p.m. to 7:00 a.m. because of the sea turtle nesting season.
Beach bonfires in the Outer Banks offers a fun experience, perfect for enjoying our beautiful beaches with your loved ones. You can enjoy bonfires in designated areas of Nags Head and along Cape Hatteras National Seashore, including beautiful spots like Coquina Beach, Rodanthe, Salvo, Waves, Avon, Buxton, Frisco, Hatteras, and the Ocracoke Day Use Area. From May through November 15th, you’ll need to obtain a free beach fire permit. Always check local guidelines beforehand to ensure bonfires haven’t been temporarily banned due to increased fire risk, ensuring your unforgettable night remains safe and enjoyable.

The Corolla Wild Horses of North Carolina’s Outer Banks are a captivating sight, representing centuries of coastal history. Roaming freely along pristine beaches and dunes, these majestic animals are best observed through guided off-road tours, the most popular and responsible way to experience them. There are currently around 100 horses living around the Outer Banks.
- There are three main guided tours that safely navigate Corolla’s rugged terrain, offering up-close views and fascinating insights. Bob’s Wild Horse Tours, Back Country Safari Tours, and Wild Horse Adventure Tours.
- Always remember: it is illegal to approach within 50 feet of the horses to ensure their safety and yours.
When planning your visit to Burrus House Inn, the most convenient airport is Dare County Regional Airport (MQI), located directly in Manteo. MQI primarily serves private and general aviation flights, making it ideal for guests arriving by charter or personal aircraft. The Manteo airport has expansion plans underway so the hope is that commercial flights will be landing sometime in the near future.
Most visitors choose to fly into Norfolk International Airport (ORF), approximately 82 miles north of Manteo. From Norfolk, it’s an easy and beautiful drive of about two and a half hours down to the Outer Banks.
Other options include Raleigh-Durham International Airport (RDU)—though it is located about 230 miles west and requires a longer drive.
