Burrus House Inn was the vision of Jack Burrus, a lifelong resident of Manteo, NC, who was passionate not just about his hometown, but also this unique waterfront property. Jack dreamed of converting his family cottage to an inn so that others could one day share in his enjoyment of waterfront life on Shallowbag Bay. Embarking on this dream, Jack sold a portion of the original property to a developer and relocated the cottage structure an acre north to its current location. What stands today is the product of that dream, with Jack’s daughter at the helm. We’ve embarked upon a new chapter, and look forward to sharing it with you.

Physical Accessibility

The Burrus House Inn, located along Shallowbag Bay in Manteo, NC, warmly welcomes all guests. However, due to the waterfront location of our property, the Inn is not completely accessible for wheelchair or scooter. Removal of necessary physical barriers for complete accessibility is not readily achievable due to the raised construction of our inn, dictated by our waterside setting.

The physical barriers include the following:

  • The grounds around the Inn and our outdoor common areas consist of uneven terrain with a gravel driveway and many grassy areas.
  • Our entire structure is raised so none of our indoor common areas are at ground level.
  • None of our guest suites are at ground level … numerous steps lead to the first level with additional steps for each of the second and third levels.
  • There is no inside elevator to the guest suites.
  • Coming in mid-June 2022: an outside lift that will accommodate a wheelchair to provide access to the four suites on our first level and to the four suites on our second level.  Stairs must be navigated to provide access to the four suites on our third level.

Room accessibility:

  • None of our rooms have a roll-in shower.
  • None of our rooms have roll-in entrances.  Doorway entrances and sliding doors are standard widths but all have a small rise.
  • One of our suites (104) has a grab bar in the shower.

For special accommodation needs or if you have any questions, please call us directly at (252) 475-1636 so we can help you determine the best guest suite to ensure you have a comfortable and enjoyable stay.

Website Accessibility

Burrus House Inn is committed to facilitating the accessibility and usability of our website for all people with disabilities. We will continue to implement the relevant portions of the World Wide Web Consortium’s Web Content Accessibility Guidelines 2.0 Level AA (WCAG 2.0 AA) or such other standards as required by the Americans with Disabilities Act (ADA). On a periodic basis, our website will be tested with assistive technology.

Please be aware that our efforts are ongoing. You may email us at [email protected] or call us 24/7 at (252) 475-1636 with questions or concerns regarding ADA accessibility, including issues accessing the website or with questions regarding the accessibility and personal needs of the various rooms.

Our goal is to ensure that anyone who wishes to visit the Burrus House Inn can do so regardless of their physical abilities. Among the ways we strive to comply with the ADA:

  • Individuals with disabilities are able to make reservations for an accessible accommodation during the same hours and in the same manner as individuals who do not need an accessible room. We protect our guests’ right to privacy of disclosure.
  • We have described accessible features in our suites and throughout our property, in detail, to allow individuals with disabilities to determine whether our inn meets their needs.
  • We guarantee that an accessible guest room, once reserved, is held for the reserving customer and is removed from all reservation systems. We make reasonable efforts with third-party reservation systems to ensure that an accessible room is available through at least some of these services and that information concerning the accessibility of the room is included on their reservation platform.
  • Guests with legitimate service dogs will be provided access to all areas of the inn where members of the public are allowed to go.
